چکیده

Since its discovery by Furchgott and Zawadzki in 1980,1 endothelium-derived relaxing factor (EDRF) has been shown to play a central role in the cardiovascular system.2 This endothelial product is chemically equivalent to nitric oxide (NO)3'4 or a biochemical congener thereof,5 and relaxes vascular smooth muscle in association with activating guanylyl cyclase and increasing cGMP. Operating through this basic paradigm, EDRF/NO is a critical determinant of several normal physiological responses of the vascular system that are essential for the maintenance of tissue perfusion.6,7 In this issue and the forthcoming December issue of Circulation, the potential role of EDRF/NO in two related vascular responses is examined. The Role of Exercise Preconditioning in Cardioprotection against Ischemia Reperfusion Injury

Cardiovascular diseases are still the main cause of mortality around the world. Therefore, it is essential to develop practical means to reduce their burden. A wealth of evidence supports the role of physical exercise in attenuating many of the risk factors of cardiovascular diseases. Moreover, endurance training warrants protection against myocardial infarction. Exercise, even if performed ...

Role of morphine preconditioning and nitric oxide following brain ischemia reperfusion injury in mice

Objective(s): Morphine dependence (MD) potently protects heart against ischemia reperfusion (IR) injury through specific signaling mechanisms, which are different from the pathways involved in acute morphine treatment or classical preconditioning. Since opioid receptor density changes post cerebral ischemia strongly correlated with brain histological damage, in the present study, we tried to el...

Effect of crocin on nitric oxide synthase expression in post-ischemic isolated rat heart

Objective: Oxidative stress damages cells and brings about the pathogenesis of ischemia/reperfusion injury. This study was carried out to investigate the preconditioning and cardio protective potential effects of crocin and vitamin E by the eNOS and iNOS express gene in ischemia/reperfusion in rats. Material & Methods: Male rats were divided into seven groups, namely: sham, control group and ex...

Nitric oxide synthase inhibition during treadmill exercise reveals fiber-type specific vascular control in the rat hindlimb.

The control of vascular tone during exercise is highly complex and integrated. Specifically, in regards to the contribution of nitric oxide (NO), the observed magnitude and muscle fiber-type dependency of the NO contribution to exercise hyperemia may differ depending on the timing of NO synthase (NOS) inhibition with respect to the exercise bout (i.e., administration prior to vs. during exercis...
